Obtaining your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification is an essential requirement for anyone who works or plans to work in establishments where alcohol is sold or served. The RSA certification confirms that individuals understand the principles of responsible alcohol service and are aware of their obligations under the law.

Step 1: Check Eligibility Requirements
Before you begin the process of registering for an RSA course, make sure you meet the basic eligibility requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must have a reasonable level of English language comprehension.
- You need to provide valid photo identification, such as a passport or Australian driver’s licence, during your course registration and attendance.
Step 2: Register for the RSA Course
Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, the next step is to register for the RSA course.
Edway Training offers both face-to-face and online RSA courses approved by Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW). You can choose the mode that best suits your schedule.
When registering, ensure you select the correct course and location and complete the required personal details accurately. If you are registering for the first time, you’ll also need to create a Unique Student Identifier (USI).
Step 3: Complete the Course and Coursework
The RSA course covers various topics related to responsible alcohol service, including:
- Understanding the effects of alcohol.
- Strategies for preventing intoxication.
- How to refuse service responsibly.
The course is designed to be informative and interactive, using class activities, presentations and videos to deliver the content. You will be required to participate in these activities and complete any assigned coursework during the training session.
Step 4: Sit for the Final Assessment
At the end of the course, you will be asked to complete a final assessment to evaluate your understanding of the material covered. The assessment may consist of multiple-choice questions, scenario-based queries and short answer questions.
Passing the assessment is mandatory to receive your RSA certification.
Step 5: Receive the RSA Interim Certificate
After successfully passing the assessment, you will receive an interim certificate, which is valid for 90 days. This interim certificate allows you to start working immediately while waiting for your official RSA competency card to be issued. Make sure to keep a copy of this certificate, as it is your proof of completion and compliance.
Step 6: Apply for the RSA Competency Card
With your interim certificate in hand, visit your nearest Service NSW centre to apply for the RSA competency card. You will need to bring your interim certificate and 100 points of identification for verification.
Your official RSA competency card will be mailed to you within four weeks, and you can also access your digital card through the Service NSW app.
